Many of us reacted with shock last year when we heard that former Head of Design at BMW Chris Bangle was the mastermind behind the latest bottle design of Hennessy V.S.O.P. Although we initially received the news with utter disdain, often remarking that the motoring industry drove Bangle to drink, we were quite stumped when we laid our eyes on the bottle he designed for Hennessy.
Recently, Hennessy launched a new collector edition called Kyrios. The legendary cognac makers say their offering is a tribute to the brand’s history and origins dating back to 1817. The collector edition, along with the new silhouette based on Bangle’s design, is characterised by a technical dimension used in the motoring industry for fast concept cars. In keeping with its origins, the bottle also has artistic dimension based on the “copper appearance used in the label design” as a reminder of the pot stills.
Bangle’s designs might have had a polarising effect in the motoring world, with critics saying his cars were as ugly as sin, while his admirers said they revolutionised the auto industry, it was during his era as BMW’s Chief of Design that the Bavarian overtook Mercedes-Benz as the global leader in sales of premium vehicles.
“Designing for Hennessy gave me the same unique sensation as working on designs for a fast BWM or a great Rolls-Royce,” says Bangle. Despite the redesigning of the bottle, Hennessy assures us that within that sophisticated collector edition Kyrios, their V.S.O.P. Cognac has remained unchanged.
