Suspended Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba’s assistants Owen da Gama (SA under-23 coach) and Thabo Senong (SA under-20 coach) may exit with Mashaba, Times Live reports.
It’s expected that Mashaba will be let go this week by the South African Football Association’s disciplinary committee after he appears before it on Tuesday. Times Live reports that Da Gama and Senong’s contracts are strongly connected to Mashaba’s contract with Safa.

In a statement, Da Gama said that he still hopes that Mashaba will not be fired after he appears in front of the disciplinary committee, arguing that continuity is the most favourable outcome for the team.
“Continuity always favours whatever you’re in. So we would hope for continuing and not change things a lot. If a new coach comes in, he could change everything and that could be more uncertain than continuity. We just have to wait and see what happens. We do not know what lies in store for us as well,” Da Gama said.
Mashaba was suspended last week following his behaviour towards Safa officials. Mashaba wagged his finger at senior Safa officials, including Safa president Danny Jordan and Safa CEO Dennis Mumble, in front of television camera after Bafana beat Senegal 2-1 in a 2018 World Cup qualifier match.

Just a few days before that, Mashaba had accused Safa of not supporting the national team because it was not offered a charter plane from Ouagadougou to Durban.
“We are not getting supported. If I take everyone back to the 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, the reason we qualified is that we travelled on charter flights for all the games. Now we arrive a day before the game from Burkina Faso. No training, nothing… yet people expect the boys to run and win?” Mashaba said.
If Mashaba does get fired this week, the three people who have been reported as the strongest contenders for his position include:
- Pitso Mosimane
- Roger de Sa
- Eric Tinkler
