The 35-year-old rejoins the local league after playing in Europe for several clubs over the past 16 years.
He kickstarted his international career in 2001, leaving Ajax Cape Town for Ajax Amsterdam, where he received intensive developmental training, which helped him become one of the most sought-after midfielders on the continent at the time.
He’s also had the privilege of playing for the likes of Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland.
In the lead-up to the announcement on Wednesday, speculation had been rife that he would join one of the “big three” clubs – Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns – but the recently crowned league champions beat the rest to the punch.
Bidvest Wits, also known as the Clever Boys, took to Twitter to officially announce the move.
“The Clever Boys are pleased to welcome Steven Pienaar to the family,” the club tweeted.
Pienaar retired from international football after playing 61 games for Bafana Bafana.
