Phiri, the lead singer of popular group Stimela, lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday morning.
Tributes have been pouring in from across the country for the legendary singer, who captured millions of hearts with his music and electrifying live performances. President Jacob Zuma was among those who sent out their condolences.

“He was a musical giant. This is indeed a huge loss for South Africa and the music industry as a whole. We are with his family in thoughts and prayers during this trying period. May his soul rest in peace,” President Zuma said.
Speaking to EWN, family spokesperson Paul Nkanyane said Phiri had not been well for a couple of days.
“He has been bad for the past few days. I spoke to him on Monday and he was struggling, but unfortunately, there was nothing we could have done. The doctors say they tried all that they could to help him.”
