Lebo M opened up on the state of the arts in SA, business and everything else but his love life!
When we caught up with Lebo M, he was on a flying visit to Jo’burg, taking time out from the world tour with multiple Oscar- and Grammy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer. The tour is scheduled to take in more than 40 cities around the world. He says the tour has allowed him to journey back in time, invoking his love and passion for singing and performing on stage.
It took him back to 1979, when he skipped the country for neighbouring Lesotho. He had no idea that he had just joined the ranks of thousands of South Africans living in exile, nor did he realise it would be more than a decade before he would see home again. All he was doing was chasing the next gig, pursuing his dream of being the next Marvin Gaye.
“Singing in front of a sold-out Wembley Stadium on this tour reminded me why I went to America in the first place,” he remembers. “In the past 25 years, I ended up working as a producer and businessman by default. My first love is and always will be singing and performing on stage.”
