Elegance, thoughtful design and the principles of timeless craftsmanship are embodied in the new Montblanc collection, which we had the opportunity of seeing at the Montblanc Black & White Week 2018. The showcase, held at the African Pride Hotel in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, included timepieces, writing instruments, jewellery and luggage from the new collection.
Present was the brand’s first and newly appointed MD for Africa, Alain Dos Santos, who welcomed guests and media in attendance, before they were treated to a sneak peek at the brand’s new designs. The premium brand, known for timeless sophistication and elegance, has produced pieces in keeping with the standards it is renowned for maintaining.

Available at the four Montblanc boutiques across the country, our highlights from the showcase were:
Great Characters Limited Edition
The Great Characters Limited Edition writing instruments sees iconic figures in history being celebrated through incredibly conceptualised and detailed designs, telling their powerful stories through each intricate facet. These include Avicenna, The Beatles, Hannibal, Ludwig II and Miles Davis (see below). The design process can take up to a year, with a dedicated team of various specialists – whose specially designed, one-off tools are immediately destroyed after production – turning out these rare works of art.
The Montblanc 1858 Collection
The Montblanc 1858 Collection of timepieces embodies the “Spirit of Mountain Exploration”, with masculine finishes for the distinguished gentleman. Paying tribute to the 160 years of the Minerva Manufacture, the 1858 collection is “inspired by the legendary professional Minerva watches from the 1920s and ’30s that were meant for military use and mountain exploration”.
Heritage Chronométrie Collection
Rooted in contemporary aesthetics and pure lines, Montblanc’s three new models in its Heritage Chronométrie Collection feature new dial aesthetics and reworked polished cases that emphasise the patented Exo Tourbillon mechanism and the perpetual calendar complication. The collection comes in three-dimensional construction, sapphire crystal or a skeletonised version that depicts a dazzle-camouflage pattern.
Montblanc Meisterstück Le Petit Prince Special Edition
Montblanc has released a special-edition Meisterstück pen inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Le Petit Prince, in keeping with its legacy of celebrating “the power of imagination and the importance of transmitting ideas and values to the ones we love”.
The Meisterstück Selection Sfumato Collection
Finally, the Meisterstück Selection Sfumato collection is an ode to the elegance of painted leather, coupled with craftsmanship excellence. Think quality crafted office and travel bags and luggage that’ll turn heads, thanks to the Tamponato, which “gives the entire surface of the soft calfskin leather a cloudy effect” in refined grey, classic brown or in eye-catching petrol blue paired with a serpent motif lining.
