Looking after your skin is a key part of looking good. Use these skincare tips to keep well groomed.
Whether you think skin products are a waste of money or you just don't have the time to bother with an intensive grooming regimen, you shouldn't ignore the needs of your skin. Beauty therapist and owner of Sheer Bliss, Nadine Heroldt, shares five simple tips for looking after your skin.
1. Don't wash your face with soap
"Soap has very low pH levels which means that its alkaline (acidity) levels are too high for your face," says Heroldt. "Rather use a face wash which has a pH level that's designed to be the same as your skin."
2. Use sunblock
Wearing sunscreen not only keeps your skin looking healthy, it can also protect you against the risk of skin cancer. According to Cansa, SA has the second-highest rate of skin cancer in the world (after Australia). Sun damage is the leading cause for skin aging. Using sunblock daily will slow down aging dramatically.
3. Adjust your aftershave
If you frequently get ingrown hairs as a result of shaving, Heroldt suggests buying an aftershave that has salicylic acid. This can unblock clogged pores and helps prevent razor burn. Salicylic acid is also used to treat skin blemishes and acne.
4. Visit a salon
Visiting a salon and getting advice from a professional is particularly advisable for men with skin problems. "Professionals can provide you with a personalised prescription for your skin," says Heroldt.
5. Book a facial
Men need facials just as much as women do. "Have a facial every four to six weeks," suggests Heroldt. "Facials remove impurities and restore the skin's essential nutrients."
"When shopping, buy a skincare product you know you'll stick to," says Heroldt. Buying a collection of facial products is pointless if you don't use them.
