Watch out for these tales as they can stand in the way of you burning that belly fat.

Not seeing the desired results while frequenting the gym or having a rigorous training routine may be equated to a futile exercise. We ask Candy Bukes of Travelling Trainers to share some of the most common fitness myths among men:

MYTH: Doing crunches helps you get a six-pack
FACT: Spot reducing is impossible. While crunches do firm and strengthen your abs, they won’t remove body fat. In addition to crunches, you’ll have to do at least 30 minutes of cardio and strength training five times a week to boost the effect of weight loss. This should be coupled with a good diet.

MYTH: Exercising every day will get you a firmer and flatter belly
FACT: Although your stomach is a postural muscle and has slow twitch fibres that recover quickly, it’s still a muscle and needs time to rest, recover and rebuild.

MYTH: Taking supplements will make you look bulky in no time
FACT: While there may be some benefits from these supplements, it’s always advisable to get your Arnold Schwarzenegger look the natural way. Some supplements may lead to undesired side effects, such as infertility and problems associated with the nervous system. However, a good workout, coupled with the necessary diet, may yield the desired results.

3 GOOD FITNESS HABITS TO ADOPT

1. Set goals
This will help you know where you’re going and what direction you need to get there with regards to your fitness levels. This is also a good way to keep you motivated and ensure that you’re not tempted to stop within a month of your training regime.

2. Regular checks
Go to your doctor for regular health checks so you know that you’re on the correct fitness regime and that you’re aware if any health risks that may arise.

3. Get a professional
You need someone knowledgeable in the fitness field to help and motivate you along the way. It’s always good to know the exercises you need to do in order to reach your fitness goals.
