Too bold or not bold enough? Here’s how to get the right balance of colour in your clothing.
Bold colours are so in this summer, but rocking daring shades can be a bit scary. Here’s how to get the balance right without feeling like a clown.
1. Choose complementary colours
Choose colours that complement your skin tone. The darker you are, the more saturated the colour can be. Those with fairer skin should go for light to medium hues.
2. Accessorise with colour
If you are afraid of colour, start by introducing it through accessories. Inject some colour into neutral outfits and make them pop by adding a bright spring scarf, tie or belt.
3. Wear one bold item at a time
Avoid wearing too many colours at once (unless you want to look like a member of the 80s group Wham), as the coloured pieces will compete with each other. For an eye-catching look, team one bold piece of clothing with a neutral piece, like a pair of red shorts with a white shirt or a pink golf shirt with beige khakis. Whatever bold piece you choose, remember the rule of thumb is that the rest of your outfit should be limited to basic cuts in neutral tones.
4. Layer colours
If you are afraid of sticking out too much in a bold coloured shirt or sweater, then layer your look. For example, add a grey cardigan to a bright polo shirt.
5. Keep to similar colours
There’s no need to be afraid of wearing two coloured pieces together. Just make sure they are in the same colour palette. For example, wear a tie in a solid colour that picks up or matches one colour in a printed shirt.
