When it comes to dressing, you have to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative.

PROBLEM: You have a short neck
SOLUTION: You can create the illusion of length by wearing a V-neck shirt or sweater. You can also wear a collared shirt with a short collar stand – the band that supports the collar – which is generally 1cm.

PROBLEM: You have a long neck
SOLUTION: Turtlenecks are usually hard to pull off, but if you’re a man with a long neck, then take advantage of this garment. When it comes to shirts opt for one with long pointed collars.

PROBLEM: You’re short-waisted
SOLUTION: Men with long legs should avoid pin stripe pants, which will make them look gangly, as well as tapered pants which make your hips look bigger. Wear jeans or pants at your hips and not your waist. Avoid tucking in your shirts and choose tall-cut T-shirts and sweaters that hang below your waist. You can further lengthen your torso by matching the colour of your top with your belt.

PROBLEM: You have short legs
SOLUTION: Avoid cropped pants and long shirts, as these reduce height. Break up the vertical line of your body by wearing a top in a contrasting colour to your pants. Wear your pants at the waist and not at the hips to help create the illusion of length. Tuck in all your shirts and invest in a pair of suspenders – they are great at making your waistline look higher.

PROBLEM: You have a big belly
SOLUTION: Probably the most common and unsightly body flaw is the beer belly. The key here is to not accentuate your large paunch. Avoid knit shirts that cling to your stomach (many men are guilty of this fashion crime). Wear and tuck in an undershirt underneath your shirt or sweater to keep your belly in place. This will create the illusion that you are slimmer than you are. Always choose light, natural fabrics in dark colours. Avoid baggy T-shirts, as they will only make you look bigger. Go for pants that sit at your belly button level and not below.
