Stretch out your wardrobe by learning how a few key items can give you a whole new look.
The bare essentials
Save money by creating a range of outfits with these four must-have essentials.
1. Plain black and white T's
As the perfect accompaniment to any outfit, a black or white T-shirt will never let you down. Pair if with jeans for a laid-back, stylish look. Perfect for weekends, you can never have just one black or white T.
2. Chinos
Although jeans match well with nearly anything, chinos are best for a hot day when thick denim will only leave you feeling hot and clammy. What's great about chinos is that they're affordable and more professional than jeans.
3. Plain cardigan
Perfect for cool summer nights, a plain cardigan will make you look fly. Just remember to stick to neutral colours like black, blue or grey and light cotton fabrics so that you don't break out into a sweat.
4. Shorts
You'll probably get the most use out of grey, black or khaki shorts. They'll keep you cool during hot summer days. Just remember to not be fooled by the name - shorts don't mean "hotpants" it means "just over or under the knee".
Shirts and ties
Most men like to stick to the safe road when it comes to shirts and ties, while others think they're funny with silly Garfield or Daffy Duck ties that only ruin a perfectly good suit. Here's what you need to know:
- Colours: Alternating the colour of your tie with the colour of your shirt can be striking if done right. It's best to use complementary colours when experimenting with colour. Make sure that the shirt is a softer or neutral version of that colour - so going bold should be saved for your tie. For example, if you're wearing a soft blue shirt, pair it with a bold orange tie.
- Texture: This is pretty simple. If your shirt is textured, then wear a smooth tie and if your tie is textured then wear a smooth shirt. Avoid overkill at all costs.
- Stripes and checks: Never mix these two. If you have large checks on your shirt, wear a tie that has smaller checks on it. And if you have a shirt with pinstripes, wear a tie that has large stripes on it.
