SA’s business schools are on a par with international standards
Local business schools are proving to be on par with international standards, as a recent report by The Financial Times has placed four tertiary institutions on its global list of top executive education business schools.
The University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (Gibs), USB Executive Development, the UCT Graduate School of Business, Wits Business School and Lagos Business school in Nigeria featured on the 2012 Executive Education Rankings. Institutions are divided into two lists, one for open programme providers and the other for customised programmes.
The open programme providers list focuses on members from various sectors, while the customised programme list caters for individual companies.
UCT's Graduate School of Business was the only African school to have featured in The Financial Times Global top 100 for eight years running this year. The school sets itself apart from it’s competitors by being one of only two schools in SA to carry the EQUIS European quality label and is a member of the European Academy for Business in Society.
The Wits Business School is the only business school in Africa to have access to the programme in international management, while Gibs is highly revered for its unique curriculum. The institute has an entrepreneurship programme sponsored by GoldMan Sachs which equips 10 000 women with an internationally recognised certificate.
Speaking to Financial Times, UCT Director of Education Zandile Nkhata said the report only acknowledged highly reputable and internationally focused institutions.
“The achievements of these five business schools serve as a great promotion for business education in South Africa and on the continent as a whole. The report sends a strong message to the international market that African business education is globally competitive and, given the exchange rate, they offer good value for money,” she added.
