What you need to know about the e-toll system what will commence in February 2012.

Registration for the e-toll system opened this week. We speak to Priya Pillay, Corporate Communications Manager: South African National Road Agency Limited (SANRAL) about what you need to know regarding the e-toll system.

What is the e-tag?
It’s a small electronic device that you need to fit or display on your vehicle’s windscreen. You will use the tag to pay tolls on Gauteng’s e-roads and the tag will be linked to your vehicle’s license plate number.

How do you register for the e-tags?
• You can register online at www.sanral.co.za.
• By calling the e-toll call centre at 0800 726 725.
• By faxing the registration form to 0800 726 725 or emailing it to Info@sa-etoll.co.za. You can download the form from the SANRAL website.
• The e-toll Customer Service Outlets located at the following malls: Jakaranda Shopping Centre, Kollonade, Cedar Square, Maponya Mall, Westgate Shopping Centre, Benmore Gardens and Bonaero Park.
• Or along the Gauteng e-road.
• The e-tags are also available from participation retail stores such as Checkers, Pick n Pay and Shoprite.

What documents do I need when I register?
• A valid ID document and contact details.
• Physical and postal address.
• Make, model and the colour of your vehicle.
• Account payment details (bank account, credit card details or cash)

How much does it cost when you register?
A R50 deposit is payable per vehicle on registration, which will be credited to your account when you get you e-tag.

How much will the toll cost?
The finalised toll tariffs for next year haven’t been announced as yet. Visit www.sanral.co.za for more information.

What options do I have regarding payment?
You have two options when you register:
1. The pre-paid option: the e-toll account is automatically or manually topped-up from a nominated bank account.
2. The credit card settlement option: the e-toll account is linked to your credit card and transactions are rolled up on a daily basis and one amount is deducted from your credit card.

Are there any special arrangements in place?
For companies and individuals who have more than one vehicle, special arrangements are in place for registering and getting the e-tag, which can be done on the website.
