If you were planning a holiday to Zurich in Switzerland, you may want to think again... The city has topped a 2012 Worldwide Cost of Living Survey.
The strong Swiss Franc has bolstered Zurich to the top ranking as the most expensive city to live in, toppling Tokyo into second place.
According to a survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit, the Swiss city jumped three spots from fourth place last year to take the crown. Geneva and Osaka came in joint third.
The poll reveals that because the currencies of both Switzerland and Japan have strengthened over recent years, they have become relatively more expensive. Last year a loaf of white bread in Zurich cost $5,1 (about R40). The same loaf now costs $6,15 (about R48).
Other cities making it to the top ten are Oslo, Paris, Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore and Frankfurt.
The index measures the cost of an expatriate lifestyle in more than 130 cities using a weighted average of the prices of 167 products and services. According to the Cost of Living Index, Johannesburg ranked 69 out of the 131 countries in December 2011.
Just another great reason to live in SA!
