Staying balanced and authentic
BOOKMARKS

Modern lifestyles are increasingly fast paced and challenging – and my own is no exception. I practically eat, sleep and drink Discovery 24/7 and I’ve found that time management is essential in keeping me balanced

I work hard at achieving balance in my life, which I need in order to be a good leader, make the right decisions and maintain my positive outlook. That balance involves making time to spend with my family, exercising daily and setting aside time each morning to focus on getting through the day ahead positively and achieving all I can in it. I have to work at cultivating self-inspiration, self-motivation and a positive attitude: it’s not something that just happens. I’m always inspired to get up in the morning.

Being the CEO of a big company and handling the responsibilities that come with it are duties I take extremely seriously. Equal to this is the driving force of meeting challenges and the awareness and energy of starting something new: each new day, we can make a change for the better, in all the areas in which we do business. I have a real desire to build something substantial in my life – to leave a legacy. It isn’t about money and possessions: it’s about making a change and building a better society. That truly excites me.When I’m asked what people value most in a leader, the answer is simple: authenticity. What excites me in my life must also show in my work. Discovery is a manifestation of not only my own passions, but also those of my management team.

Most of us love to exercise and live a healthy life. This explains the origins of Vitality and its huge success, since passionate people are the drivers of excellence and innovation. I regard Discovery as me at my very best. While I’m not as good as Discovery, it’s my ultimate dream and I strive towards it. I’ve also come to the realisation that it’s my role as a leader to make others realise that they can do more than they think they can. They can do anything.

There’ve been people in my life who sometimes believed in me more than I believed in myself, and I’d walk away thinking: “If they think I can do it, then maybe I can.” I’d then go ahead and accomplish more than I believed I was capable of.Telling others that you believe wholeheartedly in their ability to do something allows them to accomplish the impossible and enlarges their vision. It gives you – and them – energy. It’s an attitude that’s contagious, spilling over onto others and them empower others in turn.
