Let’s admit it – we have all thought about starting a blog.
The vast majority of us think we have something to say. And most of us do, if only we could figure out the right way to say it. The reason we don’t go ahead and make a blog has more to do with confidence levels or the lack of commitment to make it happen – not because the desire isn’t there.
And on top of that – we generally want our blogs to be popular. Sure, there are some who just want to send out updates to their friends about their kids or latest cooking adventures, but even they, secretly, want those unique hits to crack the thousands every month. So how do you make your blog more popular?
Blog visitation is now part of mainstream online behaviour for many internet users and although latest estimates show that blog creation is slowing down a little, their influence on opinions, business and politics has never been greater.
Take these suggestions on board:
- Content is still king, but put some effort into design – make your blog look good.
- The writing should be controversial, which is not to say in needs to be daring, just thought-provoking and unique. Say something new. And remember, it’s not about what you write about, but how you write. Don’t forget to lighten more serious subjects – that doesn’t mean you have to humorous, but keep the writing a little less formal, be entertaining, throw comment and whims around willingly.
- Have an opinion. Be conclusive. State things and back them up. Do a bit of research and link, link, link.
- Have an RSS feed so you don’t have to rely on site visitation in order for people to read your posts.
- Engage and interact with your readers. Reply to comments, ask them questions, make posts interactive and be there for them. Update often.
- Write about subjects you believe in and participate in a community of other bloggers who have a similar interest in the subject. You have to care about the topic. Your passion will come out in your writing.
- Collaborate with other bloggers. Why not have a guest writer on your blog? Guest-write on other blogs.
- The more posts you make, the more links on your blog, the more you comment on other blogs, the more you are going to be noticed.
Although it may be the hardest thing to do, your blog visitation will reward you for it – be yourself.
In future posts I will look a little closer at business blogging and how it can help your organisation.
