In the fight for more market share and bigger call volumes, the two biggest network providers are unofficially at war! This is one war I will gladly accept and won’t be emigrating to Canada under a refugee status…
Earlier in the year, Vodacom launched their Night Shift campaign, to communicate reduced call rates between 12am and 6am. Now MTN has launched their “Why wait till eight” campaign, informing the public of the new reduced rates as from 7pm. I’m lovin’ it!
In an old African proverb it is said that when two elephants fight, it is the ground that suffers. Meaning, when two equally matched rivals bash it out, it is those around them with less strength that suffer. But in the case of MTB vs Vodacom, I could not disagree more!
These elephants have acquired their financial strength due to the millions of subscribers they have to acquire over the years. In my opinion, it’s time to give back a little. Even the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) feels the same way. They have recently asked the cellular industry players to cut their interconnect fees. These fees are the minimum rate that the three agree upon to connect inter-provider calls. The Icasa ruling means it will be cheaper to call and connect from one network to another.
